Cecil Beaton's fine colour portrait of the Queen at the time of her coronation is here modified only slightly with the appearance of Mr Punch at the end of the crown sceptre that she is holding in her right hand. This Mr Punch belongs to Brighton's Sergeant Stone and was photographed in his box at an exhibition at the University of Brighton in 2000. Punch & Judy is in the same tradition as court jesters and few scenes could be more grand and courtly than this Beaton portrait. The crown sceptre, incidentally, dates from the 17th Century and on its end is one of the largest and most valuable cut diamonds in the world. No wonder Mr Punch is waving his sausages.
