Empty or crowded, there is a beautiful variety of beaches. Sand may be the preferred material for most, but Brighton's shingle or the mud along the Thames Estuary have character and charm of their own. A beach in winter is a world away from the same place in the heat of summer and the colour of every beach can be transformed in minutes by sunshine or cloud. Most important of all is the sea, which both creates the beach and can then destroy it.
