Children performers at the Surrey County Show in Guildford in June 2002
Children are said to be growing up too quickly nowadays, losing their proverbial innocence to a combination of consumerist pressures, precocious sexuality and the real and imagined dangers of the modern world. Ten-year olds were worked to death in the factories of Victorian England and young children are still routinely exploited, abandoned and even murdered in all too many countries. At the same time, all parents know their loved ones can be the very opposite of cherubs and every teenager, of course, can turn into a complete monster. Images Brighton has a good selection of pictures of children in the contemporary world.
