Great Dixter house and garden in East Sussex in October 1991
The English country house is a fantasy that very few can inhabit for real, but millions can visit and pretend, even if just for a few hours on a summer weekend, that they do too. Of course the owner is likely to complain of his impoverishment and the cost of repairing the roof, but fantastic wealth has been locked up in these places for hundreds of years. They are often of great historical interest and surrounded by beautiful gardens and parks. Whoever owns them, they are a visually stunning heritage for everyone.
