A rider on the beach at the end of the London to Brighton bike ride in June 2003
There are more bikes than cars in the world and it's a fair bet that the pedal powered will outlive the petrol driven, at least in the present form of the infernal combustion engine. The bicycle has been a liberation for millions and it's a way of having healthy fun as well as a cheap means of getting around. Whether they are in flowing skirts on old Raleighs or lycra-clad with shaved legs on the Tour de France, cyclists look a lot more interesting than car drivers. Images Brighton has a very wide range of cycling pictures taken since the early 1980s.
