Liberty & Livelihood countryside march in London in September 2002
Even if they have all too rarely changed government policy, there have been some great demonstrations over the years. The 1980s saw increasing rage against the Thatcher regime, culminating in the Poll Tax demo of 1990 (which can in fact be said to have been partly successful). More recent years have seen widespread protest on environmental issues, together with the mobilisation of the so-called countryside lobby. The current climate is dominated by the exceptional range and level of dissent over British and US government policies on Iraq and Palestine. Images Brighton has a very good choice of interesting pictures of demonstrations and protests, mostly in London but also in Brighton and elsewhere since the early 1980s.
