Two young England football supporters in Surrey in June 2002
From the archers at Agincourt to the clubbers in Aya Napa, the English have a reputation for getting up the nose of foreigners with their disciplined aggression or their loutish behaviour. It's not surprising that the French now call us "Les Fuck-Offs". But England is also the green and pleasant land of Blake and Shakespeare, John Cleese and Tommy Cooper, afternoon tea and chicken tikka masala. Even if today it is too often less a case of England expects than England expectorates, this is still a country where the gentle and the eccentric are valued and allowed to live in relative peace and freedom. Images Brighton has many pictures that illustrate the contrary and fascinating character of perfidious Albion.
