Protest against Leylandii hedges at the Liberal Party Conference in Brighton in September 1998
The environment is now a major political issue and some would argue it is the most important of all. Though by definition global in scope, environmental protests often focus upon very particular and local concerns. The building of a waste incinerator or a road, the destruction of a wood or, as in the picture above, the growing of a hedge in a neighbour's garden. Nothing could be more serious than the ruination of the planet, but there can still be humour and charm in some of the ways that environmental issues incite people to political action. Images Brighton offers pictures of a wide variety of environmental protests and demonstrations since the 1980s.
