Rottingdean village fete in Sussex in August 2003

Small-scale community events such as village fetes and street parties are one of the great joys of England.  Nobody expects them to be the Rio Carnival and rain often falls on the day, but that rarely diminishes their pleasure.  Jam is still sold, tea drunk and cakes eaten.  Nowadays there is likely to be curry as well.  The happy noise of the children on the bouncy castle competes with the band that might just possibly be Irish.  At the end, the organisers will sit down and discover that, once again, they have almost broken even.  It's all good honest fun and the online library has many pictures of life at such events in cities, towns and villages.
