To update the old adage, perhaps it is better nowadays to travel cheaply and then arrive at an airport within a hundred miles of one's final destination. Millions of people now go for the weekend to places that previously they would have been lucky to visit once in a lifetime. Holidays can of course turn into nightmares and tourists can easily ruin their dream destinations. There are important social and environmental issues about the travel business, as well of course as its lighter side.
