The Palestinians' struggle for their homeland is one of the longest and most bitter conflicts in the world. Israel's oppression of them is also a running sore that infects and inflames the entire politics of the Middle and Near East. Protests around the world clearly connect events in Palestine with those in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. It is also arguable that Al-Qaeda's attack on New York in September 2001 would not have found support from anyone but a handful of fanatics if there were peace and justice in Palestine.
