Brighton's West Pier on fire in March 2003
The West Pier at Brighton is famously derelict, but it is only one of 54 seaside piers around the coasts of Britain. Most have declined since their heyday in the golden age of the seaside holiday, but some still flourish and are being renovated. It took the confidence and eccentricity of the Victorians to conceive of building large structures that stuck out into the sea and served no useful purpose beyond leisure. Piers are about frivolity on an often magnificent scale and their architecture is a riot of decoration. The online library has an excellent choice of pictures of many English piers in all conditions and at different times of the year.
