A street sign in Brighton in June 2001
We live in rude times, at least in public. The more that political correctness rules in the official world of business and politics, the greater seems to be the need for some people to be gratuitously rude and offensive in what they say, wear or do on the street. A liberal eye will often see humour in a clever piece of rude graffiti, while others take umbrage and call for a clean-up. There are sexy messages and drawings on the walls of Pompeii, so this is not exactly new. But there is something robustly Anglo-Saxon about the extent of contemporary rudeness. Images Brighton, for better or worse, collects numerous examples of visual offence.
