From Bond Street to Brick Lane, with windows and stalls stuffed with all the paraphrenalia of the modern world, retailers compete for customers and their money. Huge shopping centres, with their often curious and unsettling mixture of glitz and blandness, have now taken a large share of the retail market. But independent outlets in high streets and markets survive and sometimes thrive by offering service, specialities or price reductions.
