Sunbathing on Brighton beach in July 1987
The English summer was said to be three fine days followed by a thunderstorm. What with global warming and the evidence of the heatwave of 2003, who knows what it'll be like from now on. One thing is certain, however, is that the British will continue not only to grumble about the summer, but also be invariably oddly dressed for it. This is the season when builders show their bottoms, young women show more or less everything and most people turn very, very pink. It is also of course when gardens luxuriate and the countryside is rich and gorgeous. Images Brighton has a fine selection of pictures to illustrate all of this.
