Remembrance Sunday in Brighton

Every year in Britain, November 11th is marked as Remembrance Day, originally in reference to the armistice that ended the First World War, but subsequently in memory of British and Commonwealth dead and wounded in all wars and conflicts.  The nearest Sunday to November 11th sees ceremonies at war memorials across the country, the largest being at the Cenotaph in London's Whitehall.  The autumnal month of November, with its chill and mists, is particularly appropriate for this collective celebration of pride and sorrow.  This year, with the armed forces of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on active service in Iraq or Afghanistan, the memories are as much contemporary as historic.  However wrong it might have been to send them there in the first place, the dangers they face are all too real.  The pictures in this set were all taken at the main Remembrance Sunday ceremony in Brighton on November 9th 2003.
