The Royal Pavilion at Brighton
Brighton's Royal Pavilion, built for George IV between 1815 and 1821, is one of the best loved buildings in Britain. It was not always so admired, however, and narrowly escaped being demolished by the Victorians. Exotic, beautiful and wonderfully vulgar, the Pavilion is the perfect architectural representation of Brighton. It can cheer you up even in the gloom of winter and in the summer, surrounded by its lush gardens, it can be a quite magical place. For a good read about it, there is a recently published book called "A Prince's Passion, The Life of the Royal Pavilion" written by Jessica Rutherford, who is its current director. The pictures of the Pavilion's exterior in this set were taken between 1989 and 2003.
