Like the butchers featured last week, secondhand bookshops in Britain are in decline.  Increased rents in the high street have combined with a switch to trading over the internet to close down more and more outlets, especially those with a general rather than a specialised stock.  This is a great shame, since the world of secondhand bookselling has long been full of charm and eccentricity. Another victory for the hard-faced money men at the expense of variety and real choice in our urban life today, unfortunately. The pictures in this set were taken between 1992 and 2004 in Brighton, London, Hay-on-Wye, Lewes and Worthing.
