While so many non-food retailers are suffering from the incursions of the big supermarket groups, music shops face a further threat from the internet, which enables consumers to download what they want directly, often without paying for it. Interestingly, many of the most highly specialised music retailers are successfully adapting to this new marketplace. Vinyl records, discarded by the large chains, continue to have their fans even among younger people. With dance music now moved into the mainstream, small shops can profitably stock the new genres before the big stores catch onto them. The independent music store is a valued part of the contemporary street scene and long may it remain so. The pictures in this set were taken in Brighton, Worthing and London in 1997, 2003 and 2004.
