Brighton's wonderful West Pier has finally had it.  The money promised to restore it has suddenly been taken away by the Heritage Lottery Fund and, despite last ditch schemes still being attempted, the pier will never rise again in all its Victorian and Edwardian finery.  The loss to Brighton is all the greater for the undoubted fact that this fantastic marine structure could have been open today were it not for the pathetic timidity of the West Pier Trust and the local council, together with the miserable obstructions put up by the owners of the Palace Pier.  Oh What A Lovely Pier ! should be the sad refrain in February 2004.
