There are, of course, plenty of women who love cars and many would say they drive them better and safer than the men.  For the most part, however, the car remains essentially a man thing,  The design and advertising of cars still focuses on acceleration and speed more they do on than safety.  Rallies of vintage or customised cars are dominated by men, as is the world of motor racing.  The emphasis on power and control continues with the popularity of SUV's - sports utility vehicles that are capable of crossing the Sahara, even if they rarely venture further than the school run.  Every year we are told that the car is a dinosaur and the planet cannot contain its unfettered expansion, but the end seems nowhere in sight.  Volkswagen now sells more cars in China than anywhere else and who can blame Chinese men, like any other, for wanting to get behind the wheel and play at Mr Toad.  The pictures in this set were taken in Brighton, Sussex and Rome between 1984 and 2004.
