Street entertainment has become a substantial branch of show business in recent years, not least because many European countries provide extensive subsidies for public performance events. Brighton Festival has hosted an annual showcase of street entertainers since 1994 and it attracts hundreds of performers and very large audiences. This year's Streets of Brighton event took place over the weekend and, though not blessed with the best of weather, it was full of fun, variety and colour. A group of gorillas were realistic enough to make small children scream in terror. A passing drunk hijacked a microphone and sang to much genuine applause from the crowd. There were traditional attractions such as tap-dancing and piano-playing, but also a guitarist who performed upside-down. As so often in Brighton, it was not always clear which were the performers and which the audience.
