Paris doesn't do parks and gardens like London, but the best one in the French capital is almost certainly the Jardin du Luxembourg. It used to belong to Louis XVIII, whose palace in the park now houses the French Senate. The layout is formal and there are lots of statues and sculptures, including some fine lions and the marvellously gloomy Medici fountain. Parisians use the park in a rich variety of ways. There is tennis and boules and outdoor chess. People sunbathe or sit in the shade of the neatly trimmed trees, reading and chatting. A great deal of kissing goes on. The summer breeze blows up the dust from the sandy paths as a pair of elegant gendarmes conduct their leisurely patrol. It's all extremely civilized and very, very French. The pictures in this set were all taken in June 2004.
