The chalk hills of Southern England stretch from Hampshire to Kent and form a charming and historic landscape. The ground drains well and, even in a summer as damp as this year's, is good for both farmers and walkers. At the eastern end, behind Dover, the countryside is particularly rich in history. Julius Caesar landed here almost two thousand years ago and his Roman legionnaries first walked in Britain over the hills and through the woods of East Kent. The motorway and railway today take millions through Dover and the Channel Tunnel, but relatively few stop to visit this very English landscape. The ten pictures in this set show some of the sights of the delightful countryside of East Kent in July 2004.
