This August has been the wettest in England since 1912 and the whole summer seems to have been a washout. Farmers say their harvests are ruined, seaside resorts have had empty beaches and everyone has been complaining about the endless rain. Wet summers are, of course, not unusual in Britain and some analysts of global warming predict we shall be having more and more of them in the future. So maybe it's time to invest in the manufacturers of umbrellas, wellington boots and indoor games. This week's pictures look at the topical and abidingly English subject of rain.
