The Labour Party is back in Brighton this week for its annual seaside sermon from the Reverend Blair and not a few of his parishioners are in a pretty grumpy mood. The conduct - even the very worthiness - of the crusade in Iraq is a major cause of complaint, but it is by no means the only one. On the opening day of the conference, there was a large demonstration about the unfairness of the current system of world trade to producers in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Many of the demonstrators did indeed come from religious groups, but there is a very wide opposition to trade exploitation and this is a subject that transcends the boundaries of religion, politics and geography. Gordon Brown, Blair's Chancellor and great rival, is making a positive start by cancelling much of the debt owed by poorer countries to Britain, but there is still a very long way to go.
