From his point of view, Tony Blair had a pretty good week down in Brighton for this year's Labour Conference. Nobody, surprisingly not even Gordon Brown, blew him up. He got through his annual sermon with just a bit of heckling from a few disgruntled country parishioners and he managed to swing the vote in his favour in the Iraq debate, at least in the conference hall. The PM himself looked pretty chipper, especially since it turned out he was having a heart operation at the end of the week. But outside the conference fortress it was a very different matter. Protestors of many persuasions had Mr Blair firmly in their sights and they showed their feelings in robust and personal attacks upon him.
