This week's set of ten pictures were taken on Brighton''s Palace Pier last Thursday (December 16th). It was a chilly afternoon with banks of dark grey cloud coming in from the sea, where heavy waves were the aftermath of a gale earlier in the day. Between the clouds, bright sunlight lit up the pier, on which there were few people apart from workmen doing winter repairs and maintenance. The light shone on empty amusement rides and shuttered stalls and the seagulls soared overhead, looking optimistically for discarded chips. Pop music blared out across the wet decking at the end of the pier, where the ghost train and the helter skelter stood out colourfully against the sky. Out of season, with the summer crowds long gone, it was a good day to walk out over the sea and enjoy the space and the light. And then return to the Brighton streets and a nice warm cafe.
