This week's pictures were taken in the Holloway Road on the last Monday morning of 2004. It was sunny, cold and a holiday, so the uncharacteristic absence of traffic revealed the spaciousness of this major highway through North London. Going from Highbury Corner to Archway, it got its name in the 14th century, when a gravel surface was laid to cope with the heavy usage that had made the road sodden, sunken and "hollow". As London grew, the villas and cottages that lined its sides gave way to markets, theatres and department stores. Those have gone too and the traffic grinds on past shops, council estates and the London Metropolitan University. Holloway used to be a centre for the Irish, but the population today is much more mixed. It costs a lot of money to buy a house round here, but there is also much poverty. For richer, for poorer, the Holloway Road has seen it all before.
