This week's pictures look back to Brighton's Gay Pride in 1998. It was a hot day and the event attracted many more people than the previous year. The notion of the "pink economy" was gaining ground at the time and the gay population was becoming appreciated as a significant part of the economy, not least of course in Brighton. This meant that the Pride gathering in a local park had for the first time a number of stalls set up by businesses and organisations to chase the pink pound, the pink vote and the pink labour market. This new seriousness did not, however, prevent the day from being a riot of cheerful exhibitionism. Gay economic power has grown in respectability ever since. Time Out, the London listings magazine, is this month launching a magazine for gays and lesbians, while Stonewall, the gay lobby group, has published rankings of corporations according to the the number of gays in their higher management. All very right and proper, but let's hope it doesn't turn Brighton Pride 2005 into a business convention.
