This week's pictures come from a recent short walk around Deptford. This richly historic part of London lies on the south bank of the Thames between Rotherhithe and Greenwich and its name derives from a "deep ford" across the Ravensbourne river that runs into the Thames at this point. Francis Drake and Captain Cook set sail from here and Peter the Great came in 1698 to learn how to build the Russian Navy. Unfortunately, much of the physical history of this old borough was destroyed by a combination of Hitler's bombs and post-war redevelopment and sand barges, not warships, are moored in Deptford Creek. But Thomas Archer's fine church of St Paul still stands and it is to receive a visit from the Archbishop of Canterbury on February 27th. While he's there, he should check out Deptford High Street's market, where he'd be assured of a warm welcome and some excellent bargains.
