The British government is giving itself the most draconian powers in the fight against terrorism. Many people feel this legislation takes away liberties fundamental to our free society, while others argue that the contemporary threat justifies special measures. It's worth remembering that neither acts of terror nor laws to combat them are new to Britain. Over twenty years ago, in October 1984, the IRA blew up the Grand Hotel in Brighton at a time when jury-free Diplock Courts were being used in Northern Ireland. Legal measures of any kind are unfortunately never going to stop every determined terrorist act and democracy is the loser when our basic rights are suspended. This week's pictures remember the bombing of the Grand Hotel. The police and the cars in them now look very old-fashioned, but that event spawned the bunker mentality that so influences the apparatus of the British government today.
