Two hundred years ago, the North London district of Islington was known for its dairy farms and elegant mansions. This rural idyll on the outskirts of the dirty city was then built over and, by the Second World War, had become working class, crowded and strongly socialist. Half a century further on and much, though by no means all of Islington has been colonised by rich urban professionals. The Granita restaurant on Upper Street was famously where Tony Blair and Gordon Brown buried their rivalry (albeit temporarily) and gave us the triumph of opportunism over expectation that is New Labour. There are lots of fancy restaurants in Islington nowadays, but this is also a place where, last week, a 13-year old boy was found guilty of killing a man for not giving him a pizza. Like so many other parts of London today, Islington may have become richer but it's certainly not happier. The pictures in this week's set were all taken in March 2005.
