The Normandy town of Dieppe is easily the most charming of the Channel ports. It has a proper castle, plenty of quintessentially French old buildings and an excellent Saturday market. Besides which, this is also a real working port, with a major fishing fleet and extensive docks where the streets have names like the Cours de Dakar and the Quai du Maroc. The contrast with Newhaven, on the English side of this cross-channel route, could not be more marked. That said, Dieppe is in a relatively depressed part of France and has its own problems. Many buildings are boarded up, unemployment is high and the ferry service, despite considerable investment by the French authorities, is not as reliable as it used to be. It would be a great shame if British visitors could no longer get to Dieppe, because it is a delightful and appetising slice of the best of France.
