This time next week, New Labour will still be the government of Britain. There's no question who will win the election on Thursday and the bookies are only taking bets on the size of Blair's majority.  But that majority is likely to be well down on the result in 2001 and the reason is plain. The single most important cause of the falling popularity of the Labour government is Tony Blair and Iraq. The evidence mounts incontrovertibly that he misled not just the country but even his own cabinet and defence chiefs in order to follow George Bush in his imperial crusade against Saddam Hussein. Domestic rather than foreign policy usually decides British general elections, but enough people feel betrayed over the Iraq adventure to vote Mr Blair's party out in numerous Labour marginal seats. This week's pictures show how protests about Iraq have in the past couple of years become increasingly personalised against him. Teflon Tony, just like similarly coated frying pans, has worn too thin for further usefulness.
