Every year in May the Brighton Festival presents a weekend of street entertainment called the Streets of Brighton. Organised by Zap Arts, this event brings hundreds of performers and tens of thousands of spectators together for one of the best showcases for street theatre and music in Europe. When the sun is out, it's fabulous and even when, like this year, the weather is not so kind, it's still very, very good. Everything is free and, at least so far, the dead hand of "health and safety" has not choked the life out of the easy interaction between performers and audience. Few cities in England can provide the setting and atmosphere for this sort of event, but for the past eleven years Brighton has done so splendidly. Long may it continue.
