Brighton seafront in June is the subject of this week's picture set. The month started cool, but hot weather in the last fortnight brought down the crowds, especially on the weekend of the 18th/19th. This coincided with the London Brighton Bike Ride and caused the biggest traffic gridlock since Fat Boy Slim's beach concert in July 2002. Brighton beach, however, can handle far more people than the streets of the city can accommodate with their cars. Even when the central section of the beach is rammed, there is plenty of room elsewhere to stretch out on the pebbles and enjoy the calm and open sea. The sad remains of the West Pier have a summer respite from the winter storms that will eventually carry them away. Both the piers, like the rest of Brighton's seafront, have had more than a century's worth of Junes and the many millions of people enjoying them. The pebbles and the promenade have seen it all before.
