By way of light relief from the depressing news of the past fortnight, this week's picture set remembers Gay Pride 1995 in Brighton. This was the year when the annual gay celebration on the South Coast took a much higher public profile than previously. A parade of floats along the seafront and past the Royal Pavilion was followed by an afternoon of dancing and drinking on the Level, a park in the centre of Brighton. Bands and drag acts performed on a stage and a large commemorative AIDS quilt was displayed on the grass. The Wild Fruit disco tent was dense with smoke and house music and everyone partied joyfully well into the evening. It was all enough to give Al-Qaeda a collective apoplectic fit. And that wouldn't be a bad idea !
