This week's pictures look at a remarkable display of sand sculptures that have been created in Brighton this summer. Egyptian in theme, they include pyramids, sphinxes, mummies and temples - more than enough to encourage Indiana Jones to put on his flip-flops and come down to Black Rock (at the eastern end of the seafront near the marina) before the festival closes on September 11th. These elaborate and finely detailed constructions are the work of 60 artists assembled by a Dutch outfit called Inaxi, which also hosts a big annual sand show at Sheveningen. Brighton beach, as everyone knows, is made of pebbles, so Inaxi shipped in 10,000 tons of special sand from the Netherlands. After completion, the sculptures are coated with a mixture that includes egg white to protect them from the vagaries of the English summer weather. They are also having to be kept safe from local yobs throwing rocks at them in the middle of the night. Cleopatra would have had something to say to them.
