The musical organisation Carnival Collective is based in Brighton and has been performing since 1994. There are over 50 people in the group and their work mixes a variety of styles with a strong Brazilian Samba influence. Besides performing at public events around the country, they also run workshops and organise spectacular parades through their home town. This week's pictures feature the excellent Carnival Collective Parade in May 2000 that went through the middle of Brighton to the seafront. Colour was a strong element in this performance, with two groups of musicians and flag-waving dancers in red and blue converging on the seafront under banners stretched across the lower promenade. Dozens of drummers played as the sun went down behind the ruins of the West Pier and a huge crowd gathered on the beach. It was a classic Brighton event.
