The Labour Conference this year was a depressingly controlled affair, as Walter Wolfgang discovered when he dared to exercise his right to protest inside the conference centre. The police used their powers under the Terrorism Act to give the middle of Brighton an atmosphere straight from the pages of George Orwell's' "1984". One event, however, did succeed in bringing noisy democracy to the streets. Over 8000 supporters of Brighton & Hove Albion had a demonstration for a new football stadium, which still needs planning permission from John Prescott's government department. The football club has been without a proper home for eight years and there has been a long struggle for the new site at Falmer on the eastern outskirts of Brighton. Let's hope that by the time Labour next comes to town, the cranes are up at the construction of the new stadium.
