This week's pictures come from a trip to France in October 2005 and they give a little taste of Normandy. This region is just across the Channel and has a climate and landscape in many ways similar to Southern England. But the food and drink available on the French side is immeasurably richer and more locally sourced, especially in the markets of Dieppe, Rouen and other towns. The three best known ingredients of Normandy's cuisine are seafood, apples and, basically, everything to do with the dairy cow. A local meal might start with mussels or whelks, move on to a fish pie in cream sauce, take in a plate of cheese (Camembert or Neufchatel) and then an apple tart, all washed down with wine or cider and despatched with a Calvados. And if you can eat that seven days a week and still collect your pension, then good luck to you !
