This week's pictures feature the docks of Dieppe. This Normandy town is an important French port, not just for the cross-channel ferry but also for both fishing and general cargo.  The ferry has a recently built terminal of its own, just outside the centre of Dieppe. The main dock area lies behind two lifting bridges and stretches a long way inland, with the local fishing fleet having its own quays and market buildings. Some of the docks are empty and run-down and one of the largest dock cranes is shortly to be demolished for want of use. But new investment in the port continues and the fishing business, in particular, remains prosperous. There is, unfortunately, a huge contrast between the vitality of Dieppe's port and that of Newhaven, just across the Channel on the South Coast of England. The French seem to realise that public money and partnerships between business and local government are necessary for the economic health and future of their regional towns.
