This week's pictures are about stormy seas at Brighton five years ago. We are currently having our first cold snap of what is predicted to be a hard winter, but we have not seen, at least on the South Coast, any of the strong gales you usually get at this time of year. The storm that hit Brighton beach in October 2000 was a classic example of this type of weather. Huge waves rolled in from the Channel and their crests touched the wooden decking of the Palace Pier. After hitting the beach and shifting hundreds of tons of shingle, they left behind piles of foam and a rich assortment of flotsam and jetsam. The English Channel is a tiny sea compared to the Atlantic or Pacific, but it can still produce an impressive wave or two when it feels like it.
