In the gloom of early December, at the beginning of what could be a long winter, the subject of this week's picture set should bring back some carefree memories of summer. Carousel horses are among the best and most traditional features of fairgrounds and seafronts and they are often enjoyed as much by adults as children. In the technical language of showmen, a carousel and the wonderfully decorated horses that go round it are known as a set of gallopers. Many gallopers still in use are over a century old and there are excellent examples with Carter's Steam Fair and also on the Brighton seafront. Every year they need to be dismantled, put away for winter and then painted up ready for the spring. It would be nice, some might think, if we could all do the same.
