The first gay weddings in England took place on December 21st and Brighton, as you might expect, led the field with three ceremonies taking place at eight o'clock in the morning. Debbie & Elaine Gaston, Gino Meriano & Mike Ullett and Roger Lewis & Keith Willmott-Goodall pledged their troths in what are officially called "civil partnerships". The media was there in force and the police also attended for fear of a disruption such as the one by Christian zealots that took place at the first gay wedding in Belfast a couple of weeks previously. But thankfully there was no trouble of any kind and all three of the Brighton couples went off happily into the sunrise in pink limousines. It seems a long. long time since gay love was illegal. We've made an advance on this front at least.

Debbie and Elaine Gaston tied the knot at 8am on December 21st (image 2649-12)
