This week's pictures are the result of a walk in January 2006 from Whitechapel to Old Street around the eastern edges of the City of London. The wealth of the City has overflowed in recent years into this area in terms of bringing in trendy bars and expensive apartments. It has not yet, however, smoothed out the rough edges of what remains one of the most deprived districts in the country, let alone London. Grim council blocks stand like ghosts next to glitzy offices and design studios. Flash cars drive along roads full of litter, graffiti and beggars. Welcome to the Britain of regeneration by market forces. That said, there's still a zillion times more life in these grimy streets than in all the executive housing estates in the Home Counties put together. It's not nice, but it's never boring.
