This week's pictures take a break from the gloomy days of February to show some of the sights of a summer weekend in Brighton back in August 1996. The town was packed with visitors, there was a bungee machine on the beach and a group of drummers were playing day and night by the ruins of the old West Pier. Brighton had already become a groovy destination for young people, but there were still the traditional seaside attractions of the pier, fish & chips and Punch & Judy. Tony Blair had not yet ascended to Downing Street and the country was mired in the dog days of John Major's conservative administration. But down in Brighton with the sun out, nobody cared a fig about any of that.
