This week the picture set comes from London's St James's Park. This is the oldest of the Royal Parks, acquired by Henry VIII and opened for public use by Charles II. Though small in size (58 acres), St James's Park is wonderfully rich in history and variety, especially for its trees and birds. In early May, the flowerbeds are full of colour, the grass is green and whole atmosphere of the place is a glorious celebration of spring. The human life of the park is as varied as its flora and fauna, with senior civil servants enjoying the sunshine along with sleeping tramps and eager tourists. If you're familiar with St James's Park, it's all too easy to forget what a precious asset it is for central London. Charles II did us all a favour.
