The picture set this week celebrates sausages. The barbecue season is upon us and eager men will be cheerfully incinerating millions of them across the land. The world of the humble sausage is rich and varied - bangers in England, Bologna in Italy, Bratwurst in Germany and Frankfurters everywhere (apart from Frankfurt).  A Greek playwright called Epicharnus even wrote a comedy ("The Orya") about the sausage in 500BC, though not enough of the text survives to explain the plot. The Romans enjoyed a spicy sausage with pork and nuts so much that it became a feature of their orgies and was banned by the Emperor Constantine.  There may or may not be such depravity at the barbecues of the Home Counties this summer, but it's a sure bet the sausages will be absolutely delicious.

The world of the sausage comes to the Thames by Tate Modern in London in July 2002 (image 2141-9)
